Centreville, Michigan

Centreville, MI

Observing Centreville, Michigan today, it may be hard to conceive that this village began as a simple log cabin built by its founder, and it didn’t stop there. Langley was a natural do-it-yourselfer. He went on to build a blacksmith shop, store building, flour and saw-mill, post office, school, and the first dam. He was the also village’s first postmaster and was instrumental in the economic growth and prosperity of the village in its early years by bringing agriculture, mercantilism, and manufacturing into the area. In 1837, the village was incorporated and today, the town which began with one determined, hard-working man has grown to a population of 1550. The Centreville Knit Goods Manufacturing Company, founded in 1872 was established and became known as “Dr. Denton Sleeping Garment Mills.”

This village may be small, but it has produced some well-known talent. Verne Troyer, the actor who played Mini-Me in the Austin Powers franchise, was born in Sturgis, Michigan but raised in Centreville. Baseball pitcher Matt Thornton attended high school in Centreville. He has played Major League Baseball (MLB) for 6 teams. Not bad for a city that as of 2019, had a population around 1,400.

Centreville also has some big attractions that lure visitors and residents alike. One of its claims to fame is the Langley Covered Bridge. Named after its founder, the bridge is one of the oldest covered bridges in West Michigan. Built-in 1887, it is also one of the longest covered wooden bridges in the United States. Not too far from the bridge is the Covered Bridge Park which allows patrons to enjoy scenic views of the St. Joseph River and enjoy family-oriented activities such as picnics, fishing, and is a great place for a wedding.

A big attraction is the Island Hills Golf Club. Here patrons have the opportunity to “stay and play” in luxury and elegance. If you are looking for some non-traditional fun, then the Temple of Terror might suit you. Owned by Mari Ann Alldredge and Tracey Cornman, this dynamic duo spends almost every Friday and Saturday night haunting the socks off of locals in the old Masonic lodge. They don’t scare people just for the heck of it, however. Some of the haunted house proceeds go to local Centreville organizations like The Boy Scouts, Family and Friends Supporting Our Troops, and other local charities.

You can’t talk about Centreville without mentioning the incredible down-home food that they have. One great eatery is The Local Beer Cellar and Pizza Oven, which touts itself as a family-friendly pizza shop and beer hall. Cassandra’s at Island Hills is an exquisite lakefront dining experience complete with beautiful views of Lake Templene. They serve seafood and steak and offer live entertainment.
